Here are some simple things you can do to help your home be prepared for the upcomming Winter season and potentially save on expensive repairs. Here is my Fall checkup list:

  • Clean your gutters and downspouts of any leaves or debris. If they are blocked, water could seep into your home, damage your home’s interior and create an environment for mold growth. Make sure the gutters, downspouts, and brackets are not damaged.
  • Change your furnace filter. Furnace filters should be changed every 90 days. Blocked filters cause the furnace’s fan to work harder possibly leading to it burning out and a costly repair bill.
  • Get your furnace checked by a professional to avoid loss of your home’s heat during the cold winter days.
  • Winterize your irrigation system. Make sure the water is drained out of system and the water line value is turned off
  • Close crawlspace vents except for one. This helps keep the winter winds from entering the crawlspace to create a drafty home or freezing pipes. Keeping one vent open allows moisture to escape.
  • If you have air conditioning, turned it off at the breaker box or electrical panel and clean the coils off.
  • Make sure your door and window seals are tight. Check that the caulk that provides an external seal is in good shape. Check the door sweep underneath the door to make sure it is not torn or lose.
  • Unhook and store any hoses hooked to an outside faucet. If your faucet is not insulated, either turn it off for the inside or cover it with an inexpensive faucet cover.
  • Make sure any pipes exposed to the outside of your home are insulated and the insulation is not torn.
  • Make sure your attic’s ridgeline and eaves vents are unobstructed. Check the screens to make sure they are not broken to avoid having unwanted guests.
  • Prune your shrubs and trees of any dead branches or unwanted growth.
